Overview
The MDSYS.SDO_IDX package body is the internal implementation of the Oracle Spatial index management API. In the context of Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.1 and 12.2.2, it provides the procedural logic used to create, alter, refresh, and drop spatial indexes on tables that store SDO_GEOMETRY columns. Spatial data is central to EBS modules that manage geographic information, such as Enterprise Asset Management, Field Service, and Logistics, where asset locations, service territories, and routing data are modelled spatially. The package is owned by the MDSYS schema and carries a VALID status, meaning the compiled body is present and consistent with its specification.
The package body is essentially a low-level engine. It is not intended to be called directly by EBS application logic; instead it is invoked implicitly by Oracle Spatial DDL operations and by higher-level Spatial APIs whenever a spatial index is created or maintained on a geometry column.
Key Procedures and Functions
The ETRM metadata documents five entry points within the package body:
IE_CRT_GEOM_METADATA— Responsible for creating or registering the geometry metadata associated with an indexed spatial column. This establishes the dimensional and coordinate-system information the index requires for correct operation.CMT_IDX_CHNGS— Commits or finalises index change operations, ensuring that modifications to a spatial index are persisted and made visible.ENDIANCONVERT— Performs byte-order (endian) conversion for index data, addressing the portability of spatial index structures across hardware platforms.TTS_INDEX_INITIALIZE— Initialises spatial index structures in the context of tablespace transport, supporting the movement of spatial indexes between databases or tablespaces.PROCESS_PARAMS— Validates and normalises the parameter strings passed into the various spatial index operations.
No parameter signatures are documented in the ETRM extract, so only the functional role of each procedure is described here.
Tables Accessed
The documented dependency information does not enumerate application tables accessed through APPS synonyms. The package instead depends on the following MDSYS and SYS objects:
MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY— The spatial datatype whose indexed columns this package manages.MDSYS.SDO_IDX(specification) — The package specification against which the body is compiled.MDSYS.SDO_UTIL— Utility routines for spatial operations.MDSYS.MDPRVT_IDXandORDMD_IDX_LIBS— Internal index-support objects.SYS.DBMS_ASSERTandSTANDARD— Standard PL/SQL and assertion utilities used for input validation.
Because the package operates on spatial index metadata and index structures rather than on EBS transactional tables directly, the absence of APPS-synonym table references is consistent with its internal, infrastructure role.
Usage Notes
SDO_IDX is invoked indirectly rather than through user-facing EBS forms. Typical invocation paths include:
- Executing
CREATE INDEX ... INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEXor itsALTER/DROPequivalents, which trigger the package body internally. - Spatial maintenance operations such as index synchronisation after geometry updates, which use routines like
CMT_IDX_CHNGS. - Database migration and transportable-tablespace scenarios, where
TTS_INDEX_INITIALIZEsupports relocating spatial indexes. - Custom extensions that manipulate geometry columns and require parameter validation through
PROCESS_PARAMS.
The metadata confirms the package is referenced by three other database objects but does not itself reference any application object, reinforcing its position as a foundational Spatial component. In EBS 12.1.1 and 12.2.2 environments, administrators should treat SDO_IDX as vendor-maintained Oracle Spatial infrastructure; it should not be modified, and its validity should be confirmed after any database upgrade or Spatial patch.
