Overview
WMS_COSTGROUPENGINE_PVT is a private (PVT-classified) PL/SQL package owned by APPS that implements the cost group assignment engine within Oracle Warehouse Management (WMS) in Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.1 and 12.2.2. Its primary business function is to evaluate the active cost group strategy and rules configured for a warehouse and determine the correct cost group to apply to a given inventory movement. The engine accepts two categories of input: move order lines and material transaction lines, distinguished by the g_input_mmtt and g_input_mtrl constants defined in the package specification. It also supports a simulation mode (g_no_simulation, g_strategy_mode, g_rule_mode) used by the rules simulation form, allowing planners to preview the outcome of cost group rules before they are applied to live transactions. As a private package, it is not intended to be called directly by external integrations; it is invoked by other WMS and Inventory processing layers.
Key Procedures and Functions
- ASSIGN_COST_GROUP — The core engine routine. It accepts a line identifier, an input type (move order versus material transaction), and optional simulation parameters, then resolves and assigns the appropriate cost group for that line. It follows the standard Oracle API contract, exposing
x_return_status,x_msg_count, andx_msg_dataoutput parameters alongside API version, initialization, commit, and validation-level controls. - GETCURRENTINPUTTYPE — A function that returns the current input type held in the session-level variable
g_current_input_type. This value is consumed byWMS_COST_GROUPS_INPUT_Vto construct the appropriate view for the active input mode.
The package also maintains session-scoped counter state through g_rule_list_cg_ctr, which buffers rule counter values for a given session during strategy evaluation.
Tables Accessed
The package references the following tables through APPS synonyms:
- WMS_RULES_B and WMS_STRATEGY_MEMBERS — the strategy and rule definitions that drive cost group assignment logic.
- MTL_TXN_REQUEST_LINES — move order lines supplied as one of the two supported input types.
- MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS_TEMP — material transaction lines supplied as the second supported input type.
- MTL_PARAMETERS, MTL_INTERORG_PARAMETERS, and MTL_SECONDARY_INVENTORIES — inventory organization and subinventory context required to resolve the correct cost group.
- USER_OBJECTS — used for object metadata or existence checks.
Usage Notes
WMS_COSTGROUPENGINE_PVT is invoked indirectly through the WMS cost group processing flow rather than by end users. The rules simulation form calls ASSIGN_COST_GROUP in strategy or rule mode to preview assignments without committing changes, while live move order and material transaction processing calls it in normal execution mode. Because the package is classified as PVT, custom code should not call it directly; instead, integrations should use the public WMS and Inventory APIs that internally reference this engine. The package is referenced by three other packages, confirming its role as a shared internal service. Its header revision (115.7, dated 2004) indicates the logic has remained stable across the 12.1.1 and 12.2.2 release lines, with no substantive signature changes documented between them.
